Working US or Australian Hours from the Philippines: Schedules, Sleep and Staying Healthy
Convert US and Sydney work hours to Philippine time (with the 2026 to 2027 daylight saving dates), negotiate overlap hours, and sleep well on a night shift.

Most remote jobs for Filipinos follow someone else's clock. A US client means nights. An Australian client means early mornings. Neither is bad, but both are easier when you know exactly what hours you are signing up for and you protect your sleep from day one.
The basics: Philippine time never moves
The Philippines is on UTC+8 all year. We do not use daylight saving time (DST). The US and Australia do, and they switch on different dates. So the gap between you and your client changes twice a year, and your shift moves by an hour even though their schedule did not.
The dates that matter for the next few months:
- Sydney started daylight saving on October 4, 2026 (now UTC+11). It ends on April 4, 2027.
- US daylight saving ends on November 1, 2026. New York goes back to UTC−5 and Los Angeles to UTC−8. It starts again on March 14, 2027.
These dates come from the IANA time zone database, the same data your phone and laptop use. The rules can change, and the dates are different every year, so check again each March and October.
What a 9-to-5 looks like in Manila
| Client city | When | Client offset | Your hours in Manila |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York (US Eastern) | Until Oct 31, 2026, and from Mar 14, 2027 | UTC−4 | 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. |
| New York (US Eastern) | Nov 1, 2026 to Mar 13, 2027 | UTC−5 | 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. |
| Los Angeles (US Pacific) | Until Oct 31, 2026, and from Mar 14, 2027 | UTC−7 | 12 midnight to 8 a.m. |
| Los Angeles (US Pacific) | Nov 1, 2026 to Mar 13, 2027 | UTC−8 | 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. |
| Sydney | Oct 4, 2026 to Apr 3, 2027 | UTC+11 | 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. |
| Sydney | From Apr 4, 2027 until October | UTC+10 | 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. |
Read the table this way. If you work New York hours, your shift starts one hour later in Manila from November 1. If you work for Sydney, your day starts one hour earlier from October 4 until April. Put both changes on your calendar and remind your household, because your sleep window moves too.
Quick check for any city: search "time in New York" on Google, or set a second clock on your phone. That is faster and safer than doing the math at 2 a.m.
Negotiating overlap hours
Many clients do not actually need you for their full eight hours. They need you for meetings, quick answers and handovers. Ask. A full US Pacific shift (1 a.m. to 9 a.m. in winter) is hard to keep for years. A four-hour overlap plus independent work is often enough.
Here is a script you can adapt:
"I'm based in Manila (UTC+8). I can be online live from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. your time for calls and quick replies, and I'll do focused work before or after that. You'll always have an end-of-day update in your inbox. Does that work for the team?"
- Offer a fixed block, not "I'm flexible". Fixed blocks are easier to protect.
- Put your overlap hours in your email signature and Slack profile, in both timezones.
- If they need full hours, it is fair to price that in. Night work is harder, so a higher rate is reasonable to ask for.
Before you accept an offer, look at the hours in the listing again. Our guide on reading a worldwide job listing explains HanapHub's Timezone Restricted label.
Sleep: protect it like your sahod
Night workers often get less sleep, and worse sleep. The US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has practical advice for night-shift workers. The tips below follow their guidance. This is general information, not medical advice. If you have trouble sleeping for weeks, see a doctor.
- Make the room very dark. Blackout curtains, foil or cardboard on the window, and a towel under the door. An eye mask works too.
- Block noise. Earplugs or a fan or white-noise app. Tricycles and karaoke do not care about your shift.
- Go to bed soon after your shift ends. Do not use the morning for errands. For night workers, the morning is prime sleep time.
- Keep the same wake-up time, even on days off if you can. Your body clock works best with a steady schedule.
- A nap before your shift helps you stay alert.
- Tell the household. Agree on quiet hours and post them on the door. Your family needs to know that 10 a.m. is your midnight.
Meals, light and your eyes
- NIOSH suggests eating three meals spread over 24 hours, and avoiding or cutting down on food between midnight and 6 a.m.
- Skip sugary and low-fiber snacks when you need to stay alert. They can make you sleepier. If you are hungry before bed, have something small.
- Work in a brightly lit room during the first half of your shift to stay alert. Cut down the light in the second half so it is easier to sleep after.
- Give your eyes regular breaks from the screen. Look at something far away, blink, and stand up. Set a timer if you forget.
- Morning shifts for Sydney clients are easier on sleep, but they start early. Go to bed early enough that a 6 a.m. start does not cut into your rest.
Night shift differential: who gets it
Article 86 of the Labor Code says every employee gets a night shift differential of at least 10% of their regular wage for each hour worked between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Republic Act 10151 added rules for night workers, like free health assessments and proper facilities.
Here is the plain truth. These rules are for employees and their employers. If you work through a Philippine BPO or an employer of record that employs you here, they can apply to you. If you are an independent contractor paid directly by a foreign client, there is no Philippine employer in the picture, so night differential is not built in. You get it only if you negotiate it into your rate.
What to do this week
- Add a second clock for your client's city on your phone and laptop.
- Mark November 1, 2026 and March 14, 2027 (US), or April 4, 2027 (Sydney), on your calendar with a "shift moves 1 hour" note.
- Buy or make blackout covers for your bedroom window.
- Write your overlap-hours script and use it in your next interview.
- Check your setup for night work: backup internet and power. See our work-from-home setup guide.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Philippines have daylight saving time?
No. Philippine time is UTC+8 all year. Only your clients' clocks change.
I'm a contractor for a US company. Can I claim night differential?
The Labor Code's night shift differential is written for employees. As an independent contractor paid directly by a foreign client, you would need to agree on a night premium in your contract or rate.
